Important Information about the Summer Recreation Program: We offer separate divisions for boys and girls in 5 age groups - Midgets: Kindergarten & 1st Grades - Pee Wees: 2nd & 3rd Grades - Intermediates: 4th & 5th Grades - Seniors: 6th & 7th Grades
- Scholastic: 8th, 9th & 10th Grades - Details
CCYSA will be offering age size-appropriate soccer balls to the Midget Group (Kindergarten & 1st Grades) ONLY. This will ensure that the new soccer player has their own ball, either at practice or developing their skills at home.
This year the only requests we will be taking is for brothers and sisters playing on the same team. We are doing this because this is a recreation league, and requesting to play with a certain coach or with friends can inadvertently put many skilled players on one team. We want the skill level on these teams to be a mixture so all games can be fun for all skill levels.
Each child and coach registering with CCYSA is provided with secondary insurance in case of any injuries.
Each year we have close to 1,000 children sign up to play in our recreational program. We could not do this without the active participation from YOU! Please continue to support this great program by volunteering to coach. We will be offering a referee clinic for all kids interested in refereeing CCYSA games. Looking forward to seeing you this summer!!
Details of the Summer Recreation Program:
WELCOME TO THE CORTLAND COUNTY YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION 2011 SUMMER RECREATION PROGRAM
Objective: To have fun while learning soccer skills, good sportsmanship, self-reliance and team work. The emphasis is not on winning, but on playing, having fun and self-improvement.
Team Selection and Notification: Team rosters are changed each year so that players can make new friends and so certain teams do not dominate perennially. Coaches should be contacting players in early July. Rosters will appear in the Cortland Standard newspaper by the first Saturday of July.
Why Girls and Boys Have Separate Teams: The decision to put girls and boys on separate teams was made by the association at the end of the year coaches meeting in 1993. Youth soccer associations in other states had found that separating the sexes lead to greater participation and longevity. We also have found this to be true.
Opening Day: Saturday July 23rd (July 16th for Scholastic Divisions). Team pictures will be held at Suggett Park. Geared 2 Sports will also have a tent set up on these dates offering everything from cleats to shin guards as well as other accessories.
Equipment: Players are provided with a game jersey. Players must provide their own: shorts, socks & shin guards. Soccer cleats with 10 or more molded studs are recommended, but not required. Sneakers are acceptable.
Game Postponement: The decision to postpone a game will typically be made at the field by the coaches and referee. Light rain is not a sufficient reason to postpone a game. If you disagree with the decision to play in inclement weather, you should contact the coach and not allow your child to play. Due to limited field space in the Cortland area, make-up games are not always possible. Coaches Only: Please contact Harry Ashendorf if you are interested in trying to make a game up.
Financial Contributions: Donations from individuals, organizations and business are welcome. Checks can be made out to “Cortland County Youth Soccer Association” and sent to Chris Hotchkiss, Alliance Bank, 65 Main Street, Cortland.
PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assisting: You may become a coach or assistant coach even if you are new to the sport. We provide training clinics and on-going support as needed.
Transportation: You are responsible for arranging the transportation for your child to and from practices and games. Never leave a child unless you see that adult supervision is present. Arrive before the end of practice so the coach can leave on time.
Spectator Conduct: Show good sportsmanship. Set a good example for your children. Under no circumstances should you openly criticize referees, coaches or players. Applaud good plays by the opposing team as well as your own. No alcoholic beverages are permitted in the vicinity of any game.
Rosters: Rosters will be listed in the Cortland Standard newspaper early July.
Practices: Practices may begin after rosters are posted and are determined by each coach.
Opening Day: July 23rd @ Suggett Park, Cortland with Geared 2 Sports / Pictures. Pictures for Marathon and McGraw teams will be held in those towns at a time to be determined.
Coaches Game/ Equipment Return: Date and location to be announced.
CCYSA FAQ ABOUT THE 2011 SUMMER SOCCER PROGRAM
Q: What age does my child have to be in order to play? A: Your child must be at least 5 years old by July 31, 2011 and no older than 12 by July 31, 2011 unless the child will be attending 7th grade in the Fall 2011. New for Summer 2011: Scholastic Division for players entering 8th, 9th & 10th Grades in Fall 2011. Details
Q: What does the $30.00 Registration Fee include? A: This fee covers a game jersey, regsitration with the New York state yout soccer association, secondary medical insurance for your child, field maintenance, equipment replacement, coaching and training clinics and referee fees.
Q: What is the deadline to sign my child up? A: The last day registration forms were accepted was June 4th, 2011. A deadline is necessary because it takes up to 1 month to find coaches, set up the teams, set schedules and send regisatration and insurance fees to NYS West Youth Soccer Association. This is all done by a small group of volunteers and therefore takes time. By extending the deadline, it only hinders the process. Every effort is being made to make registering easier for you. In addition to our sign-up sessions, each player registered the year before will receive in the mail a registration form that can be mailed in.
Q: Can my child be on (coaches name) Team? A: Each year we have approximately 800+/- children sign up for our recreational program. It creates a logistical nightmare when players ask to be placed on specific teams. The only exception will be if you are the coach, then obviously your child will be placed on your team.
Q: My child doesn’t know anyone on the team! Can I switch teams? A: No, for the same reason mentioned above. Also, soccer is a team sport. We should encourage children to make new friends. By broadening their circle of friends, it will only benefit them in the years to come.
Q: What type of equipment does my child need to play? A: Shin-guards covered by soccer socks are mandatory! We recommend soccer-molded cleats, however, sneakers are fine.
Q: How old do you need to be to referee? A: There has to be a 2 age-group difference between the players and the referee. You can begin refereeing at age 10.
Q: I’m being asked to coach. Why? A: There are over 800 children who want to play recreational soccer each summer! We do not want to turn any child away. Often, players far exceed the volunteer coaches. We understand your reluctance to coach, for this reason we provide coaching clinics, books and video tapes to help you prepare. Board members and other coaches are always available for questions as well.
Q: What other volunteer positions are there in this program? A: We are actively trying to put together a fund-raising committee. There is an area on the registration form for you to sign-up. Please consider doing so.
